Crop production totals announced

CHARLESTON — Winter wheat planted acres totaled 9,000 in 2013, up 1,000 acres from 2012. Area harvested for grain totaled 7,000 acres, up 3,000 acres from 2012. The average yield for 2013 was estimated to be 52 bushels per acre. This was down 13 bushels per acre from 2012. Production was estimated at 364,000 bushels, up 40 percent or 104,000 bushels from 2012. Winter wheat seedings for the 2014 crop are estimated at 11,000 acres, up 22 percent or 2,000 acres from 2013.

All hay area harvested in 2013 totaled 590,000 acres, down 40,000 acres from 2012. The average yield in 2013 was 1.97 tons per acre, up 0.34 tons per acre from 2012. Production totaled 1,165,000 tons, up 137,000 tons from 2012. December on farm hay stocks were 870,000 tons, up 75,000 tons from the total of 795,000 tons in 2012.

Alfalfa hay area harvested totaled 20,000 acres in 2013, unchanged from 2012. Yields in 2013 averaged 4.1 tons per acre, up 1.5 tons from 2012. Production totaled 82,000 tons, up 30,000 tons from 2012. New seedings of alfalfa in 2013 are estimated at 2,000 acres, unchanged from 2012.

All other hay area harvested totaled 570,000 acres in 2013, down 40,000 acres from 2012. Yields averaged 1.9 tons per acre, up 0.3 tons per acre from 2012. Production totaled 1,083,000 tons, up 107,000 tons from 2012.

Corn area planted for all purposes in 2013 totaled 53,000 acres, up 2,000 acres from 2012. Harvested area for grain totaled 36,000 acres, up 1,000 acres from 2012. The average yield of 147 bushels per acre was up 19 bushels per acre from 2012. Production was 5,292,000 bushels, up 18 percent or 812,000 bushels from 2012.

Corn for silage area harvested was 16,000 acres in 2013, up 1,000 acres from 2012. Yields averaged 19 tons per acre, which was 3 tons per acre above the 2012 yield. Silage production was estimated at 304,000 tons, up 27 percent or 64,000 tons from 2012.

Soybeans area planted totaled 22,000 acres, up 1,000 acres from 2012. Area harvested for soybeans totaled 21,000 acres, up 1,000 acres from 2012. The yield for soybeans in 2013 averaged 46.0 bushels per acre, down 3 bushels per acre from 2012. Production was estimated at 966,000 bushels, down 1 percent or 14,000 bushels from 2012.

The total area planted to principal crops in West Virginia totaled 674,000 acres in 2013, down 36,000 acres from 2012. Area harvested totaled 670,000 acres, down 34,000 acres from 2012. Principal crops include acres planted to corn, soybeans, wheat and acres harvested for hay.
