SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — The six-school Class AAA, Region II, Section 1 volleyball tournament got underway on Monday with Jefferson defeating visiting Spring Mills, 3-1, and Washington losing a 3-0 verdict to Martinsburg on the road.
Both winners advanced to Tuesday’s Sectional semifinals that were held at Musselman and Hedgesville, the two schools that had first-round byes.
Jefferson, which owned two regular season wins over the Cardinals, won the first two games 25-19 and 25-20 before dropping the third game, 24-26. The Cougars advanced to the semifinals when they won the fourth game, 25-13.
Alexis Staubs was serving when the Lady Cougars scored eight straight points in the opening game. In the fourth game, Kaitlyn Boyd was serving when Jefferson won five straight points.
Mallory Jackson, Hunter Slivka and Brittany Hozdic all had nine kills on the night. Devan Day was credited with 41 assists and had 19 digs in the win that sent the Lady Cougars to Musselman for the semifinals.
Martinsburg scored the last five points in winning the first game, 25-19, against Washington. The closely contested second game went to the Lady Bulldogs, 29-27.
Washington actually had a seven-point lead in the third game. But the Lady Bulldogs made another late-game move that avoided a loss.
Martinsburg took the third game, 27-25, to eliminate Washington from the postseason. The Lady Bulldogs were at Hedgesville in Tuesday’s semifinal round.
