The first football season of the newly formed NCAA Division II Mountain East Conference will see Shepherd play a 10 game football schedule that includes nine league games and the traditional opener against Shippensburg.
There are 12 schools in the Mountain East and only Wheeling Jesuit doesn’t have a football team.
In its first year in existence, conference schools will be able to fulfill contracts with schools outside the Mountain East. Shepherd has such a contract with Shippensburg. Beginning in 2014, the conference will have a round-robin schedule with all 11 football-playing members facing each other.
The 2013 Shepherd schedule features five home games and five road games.
The Rams will open the season at home on Sept. 7 against Shippensburg, a team that had an unbeaten regular season record in 2012. The other four home games come on Sept. 21 against Urbana (Ohio), on Oct. 8 against Charleston, on Oct. 19 against Notrre Dame (Ohio), and on Nov. 9 against West Virginia State.
All five of the Shepherd home games have a 12 noon starting time.
The five Shepherd road games are on Sept. 14 at Fairmont, on Sept. 28 at West Virginia Wesleyan, on Oct. 12 at University of Virginia’s Wise campus, on Nov. 2 at Glenville, and on Nov. 16 at Concord.
Shepherd will not play West Liberty in 2013.
The Rams were the 2012 WVIAC champions and qualified for the Division II playoffs where they lost to Indiana (Pa.) in a first-round game.
