VIENNA — Previously winless Ohio Valley finally broke through with a victory when it stunned visiting Shepherd, 81-76, in a WVIAC women’s basketball game on Monday.
The Fighting Scots were 1-14 overall and 1-10 in the conference. Shepherd fell heavily to 7-9 overall and 6-6 in the WVIAC.
Jasmine Gibson hurt Shepherd throughout as she totaled 29 points for the Fighting Scots. Kayla Parsley had 10 rebounds for Ohio Valley.
The Lady Rams got 18 points and nine rebounds from Emily Daniel.
Shepherd was in trouble immediately when center Gabby Flinchum picked up her first foul only 35 seconds into the game. She went out with Jimyse Brown replacing her. Flinchum returned with 15:55 remaining in the first half. Only 48 seconds later Flinchum was tagged with her second foul. She was immediately replaced by Morgan Johnson (four minutes, two personal fouls). Brown played 25 minutes and had three rebounds, four points, and four fouls.
Flinchum played 1:23 in the first half and Shepherd would trail 45-33 at intermission.
In the second half, Flinchum played 1:43 before incurring her third foul and getting removed again.
She would eventually play only 10 minutes . . . and Shepherd lost to a team that had been winless in 14 games.
The Lady Rams shot a meager 40 percent from the field, only 26.7 percent on three-point attempts and made just 18-of-28 free throws (64 percent).
Ohio Valley made 48.4 percent of its field goal attempts, went 4-for-8 from three-point range and was 17-for-25 (68 percent) from the foul line.
