Small business profile: Ranson sports store ‘caters to individuals’

Tom Lake owns The Locker Room at 809 N. Mildred St., Suite 10 in Ranson. “We are small so most people think we can’t compete with the large box stores,” he said, “but not only can we, we offer more than they do, with all the custom apparel.” Lake, who has lived in Jefferson County since 2006, opened the store a year ago.

Ranson is home to a family-owned retailer selling sporting equipment, custom apparel, team jerseys, hats, warm-up clothes and more.

September 2011

What sets your business apart from your competitors?

“We are a small business that caters to individual consumers, with special-order items, custom apparel and team jerseys.”

Tell us about yourself:

“I’m from Leesburg, Va. I’ve lived in Jefferson County since 2006.”

What’s your favorite aspect of this work?

“I enjoy interacting with people and helping young athletes get started in sports.”

What is a part of your business that too often gets overlooked?

“We are small so most people think we can’t compete with the large box stores, but not only can we, we offer more than they do, with all the custom apparel.”
