Author offering one-day writing workshop

CHARLES TOWN – Mystery writer Lauren Carr wants to take the mystery out of the world of book publishing.

The Harpers Ferry resident – who also works as a publishing consultant through her business Acorn Book Services – next week will lead a workshop aimed at providing expert advice to any interested community members interested in writing and publishing a book.

Carr is partnering with her church to host the day-long workshop,”Make That Dream of Becoming an Author a Reality.” The class will begin at 9 a.m. on Aug. 18 at Oakland Church at 70 Oak Terrace in Charles Town.

Local author Lauren Carr, whose latest mystery “Shades of Murder,” has just been released, will lead a writing/publishing workshop next week. The class, open to anyone in the community, costs just $15 to attend, and the fee includes lunch.

The workshop, just $15 to attend, will include a lunch catered by the church’s in-house restaurant, Paul’s.

“It’s part of an ongoing effort to serve our community by providing instruction about things that interest people,” Carr said.

Carr, a native of West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle, recently published “Shades of Murder,” the fifth installment in her Mac Faraday Mysteries series. The books, set at Deep Creek Lake, Md., began with “It’s Murder, My Son.”

In her role as owner of Acorn Book Services, Carr is a publishing manager, consultant, editor, cover and layout designer and marketing agent for independent authors.

A popular speaker, Carr regularly is invited to speak at schools and on author panels, most recently at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College. In such venues as well as in community education classes in Jefferson and Berkeley counties, Carr happily passes on what she has learned in her years of writing and publishing to those looking to pursue a dream of writing.
