Three of the four high school spring sports begin their respective seasons this week.
The Jefferson High softball season was to commence on Wednesday at Berkeley Springs. But the Berkeley Springs boys basketball team won a berth in the Class AA state tournament in Charleston and was also scheduled to play against Bluefield on Wednesday evening. With some students from Berkeley Springs going to Charleston for the basketball game, the softball game with Jefferson will be rescheduled for another date.
On Thursday, the Lady Cougars will face Handley in Shenandoah Junction at 7 p.m. Three more home games quickly follow the Thursday opener. Martinsburg visits on Friday at 7 p.m., St. Maria Goretti is at Jefferson on Monday (March 19) at 4:30 p.m. and then Hedgesville comes in for a Tuesday game scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
The Washington High softball team does open on Wednesday with a road game at Handley in Winchester at 5:30 p.m. The Patriots are at home for the first time on Friday when they face Petersburg at 4 p.m. Hampshire visits Washington Saturday at 3:30 p.m. and then Musselman is at Washington on Tuesday (March 20) at 4 p.m.
Jefferson’s baseball team was also supposed to play at Berkeley Springs on Wednesday but the basketball game in Charleston has caused that game to be either postponed or cancelled.
The Cougars will now open their season at home at Sager Field on Friday at 7 p.m. against Wyoming Area (Pa.). On Saturday, the Cougars will play Wyoming Area again at 11 a.m. and then play a second game that same day at 2 p.m. against visiting St. Maria Goretti at Sager Field.
Jefferson will still be at home on Tuesday (March 20) when it plays Hedgesville at 6 p.m.
The Washington High baseball team will open its season on the road in Hagerstown on Thursday, March 15 against St. Maria Goretti at 4:30 p.m. The Patriots are at home at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday when they host Hampshire. Musselman visits Washington on Tuesday (March 20) for a 4:30 p.m.
Washington High begins its boys tennis season on Wednesday (March 14) at 4 p.m. at John Handley High in Winchester. The Patriots then host Hampshire on Monday at 4 p.m. and also host Musselman on Tuesday (March 20) at 4 p.m.
The Patriot girls begin their tennis season on Wednesday (March 14) when John Handley High visits the Washington campus for a 4 p.m. match. On Monday, March 19, the Patriots host Hampshire at 4 p.m. and then have a match on the home courts on Tuesday at 4 p.m. against Musselman.
Both of Jefferson’s tennis teams open play on Saturday, March 17 when they host the Jefferson Invitational, which is slated to begin at 9 a.m. The Jefferson boys face Hedgesville in Shenandoah Junction on Tuesday, March 20 at 4 p.m.
The Jefferson girls also begin on Saturday in the Jefferson Invitational and then host Hedgesville on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
