CHARLESTON (AP) — An Ohio man has been charged with murder in the death of a West Virginia teenager.
Police tell media outlets that a body found in Meigs County, Ohio, has been identified as that of 16-year-old Erika Brown of Cross Lanes. Brown was reported missing Aug. 10.
Meigs County Sheriff Keith O. Wood said an Ohio trooper arrested 36-year-old Ernest M. Roach of Racine, Ohio, on Saturday on a federal warrant obtained by authorities in Kanawha County, West Virginia.
U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin’s office says Roach faces a murder charge in Ohio. Roach also faces a federal charge in West Virginia of interstate travel with intent to engage illicit sex.
Campers found Brown’s body on Saturday along the banks of the Ohio River in Portland, Ohio.
According to a release from the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, police learned Brown was using Internet postings on Craigslist to meet men.
Law enforcement searched hundreds of thousands of phone records until evidence indicated Roach met with Brown the night she disappeared, the sheriff’s office said. Roach was questioned by police and volunteered to take a lie-detector test but never showed up for the meeting.
