Museum director protests sentence in theft

PARKERSBURG (AP) — The director of a veterans museum in Parkersburg is protesting the outcome of a court case in which a Wood County man was sentenced to probation for stealing from the museum.

Veterans Museum of the Mid-Ohio Valley director Gary Farris placed a sign outside the museum Friday. It mockingly invited the public to steal from the museum without the threat of jail time.

The Parkersburg News and Sentinel reports 61-year-old Robert Lawrence Burdette of Belleville pleaded guilty earlier this month to petit larceny for stealing a bayonet, cap and patch from the museum on Jan. 4.

Wood County Prosecutor Jason Wharton says the items were returned.

Farris says he’s not pleased with the outcome of the case.
