DINGESS (AP) — West Virginia State Police say troopers fatally shot a Mingo County man after he pointed a gun at them.
State police spokesman Lt. Michael Baylous says troopers were investigating a wreck when the shooting occurred Sunday night.
Baylous says 31-year-old Randy Matheny of Dingess was driving the vehicle when it crashed. His wife and the couple’s toddler were passengers.
Witnesses told troopers that Matheny got out of the vehicle and fired a handgun into the air. A family member took Matheny and the child home and took the wife to a hospital.
Baylous says troopers went to Matheny’s house and saw him standing in the living room with a handgun. He refused an order to drop the gun and then raised it toward the troopers. The troopers then shot him.
