West Virginia man pleads guilty to abuse in baby’s death

WESTON (AP) — A Harrison County man has pleaded guilty to an abuse charge stemming from the death of a 14-month-old boy in Lewis County.

Media outlets report that Christopher Sheppard pleaded guilty to child abuse resulting in death on Thursday in Lewis County Circuit Court.

Prosecutors say Sheppard was babysitting at a Jane Lew apartment and left the boy, Rex Mick, unattended in a sink. The boy fell out of the sink, landed on his head and later died.

Sheppard had been scheduled to stand trial beginning Monday.

The boy’s mother, Julia Mick, pleaded guilty in January to child neglect resulting in death.

Both Sheppard and Mick are scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 14.
