Road to be renamed in honor of Berkeley deputy

MARTINSBURG (AP) — A section of West Virginia Route 901 is being renamed in honor of a Berkeley County deputy killed in the line of duty.

The Deputy John L. Burkett III Memorial Highway will run from Spring Mills to Hedgesville.

The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown, Maryland, reports that a dedication ceremony will be held June 22.

Burkett was killed in 2001 in a head-on collision on Interstate 81 in Pennsylvania while transporting a prisoner. The 28-year-old Falling Waters resident had been with the sheriff’s office for about a year.
