New city manager wants to spruce up downtown

CHARLES TOWN – Cleaning up downtown Charles Town is the first order of business for David Mills, who assumed the city manager’s job Monday.

At Monday’s city council meeting, Mills proposed hiring part-timers for maintenance work such as picking up litter, pulling weeds and painting yellow lines on curbs.

He suggested creating a roster of potential employees none of whom would work more than 60 hours a month.

“We could try out some folks and see how they work out, then formalize our decision,” Mills said.

Mills said he would be submitting a formal proposal to the council but suggested quick action because “cleaning up Charles Town is a significant issue.”
