Forty-eight Valley Baseball League alumni and current players were selected late last week during the 2014 Major League Baseball draft, including the first two from the upstart Charles Town Cannons organization.
Infielder Emmanuel Marrero, who played shortstop for the first-year Charles Town Cannons last summer, was drafted in the seventh round by the Philadelphia Phillies. Marrero, who played collegiately at Alabama State, played 43 games for the Cannons last summer, batting .250 and helping Charles Town become the first-ever first-year franchise to reach the playoffs.
Right-handed pitcher Adam Parks, who pitched a perfect game last summer for the Cannons, was drafted in the 33rd round by the Texas Rangers. Parks pitches collegiately at Liberty University, and he is likely to return to the mound for the Cannons this summer.
The Cannons, who opened their second season in Charles Town on May 30, finished the 2013 campaign with a 23-21 record before being ousted from the postseason following a first-round series loss to Strasburg.
Charles Town is 4-4 thus far in 2014.
