ELKINS (AP) — Former Barbour County Sheriff John Hawkins has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison for mail fraud.
Federal prosecutors say Hawkins was sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Elkins.
The 48-year-old Hawkins of Philippi resigned in February after he pleaded guilty to the felony charge.
Hawkins admitted to staging an automobile accident in April 2013 to receive an insurance payment of nearly $8,300. He used his office email account to communicate with an insurer about the claim, which was paid.
In addition to his prison sentence, Hawkins must make full restitution.
