Educator honored

SHEPHERDSTOWN –  Retiring Shepherdstown Elementary teacher Cheryl Lawrence, 65, recently accepted the Distinguished Mountaineer Award from Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin.

Lawrence, who teaches fifth grade, was hailed for her 43 years of teaching at the school along with hundreds of hours of community service.

Lawrence, the mother to Jefferson County Delegate Tiffany Lawrence, is a Jefferson County native who grew up on a farm in Summit Point.

She’s twice been named Teacher of the Year at Shepherdstown Elementary School. Her volunteer work has included helping the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Great Strides “Team Faith” annual Walkathon and serving as Jefferson County Fair Youth Division Assistant Superintendent.
