Washington 76, Hedgesville 45

CHARLES TOWN (March 7) – Dominique Newman scored 24 points and Jerome Jones added 17 as top-ranked Washington defeated Hedgesville, 76-45, in Charles Town to win the sectional boys basketball title.

The Patriots improved to 23-0 on the season and earned home court advantage in the regional finals scheduled for Tuesday, March 11.

Washington will face Elkins, with the winner advancing to the state tournament in Charleston.

Against Hedgesville, Josh Dudley scored nine points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Austin Shields netted seven points as the Patriots cruised to a 40-23 halftime lead.

Washington continued pouring it on in the second half, with Kendell Smith finishing with six point and Maleke Jones netting six points and adding seven rebounds and seven steals.

The Patriots’ Kendall Coles scored four points off the bench, and Ryan French added two as Washington racked up an overwhelming victory against the Eagles after the teams had played two close contests during the regular season.

 

Washington 86,

Jefferson 45

CHARLES TOWN (March 6) – Jerome Jones scored a team-high 13 and had eight rebounds as top-ranked Washington defeated Jefferson, 86-45, to advance to the sectional finals against Hedgesville.

Dominique Newman, Kendall Coles, Maleke Jones and Kendell Smith also all posted double-digit scoring for the Patriots, who improved to 22-0 on the season and earned a berth in the regional tournament.

Jahlil Jenkins led Jefferson (12-11) with 16 points and Michael Tennant added seven. But Washington shrugged off a slow start and cruised to a 47-15 halftime lead.

With the second string playing most of the second half, Derrick Brunson scored eight points and had eight rebounds for the Patriots, while Ryan French added seven points.

Newman finished with 12 points and eclipsed the 1,000-point career mark with a 3-pointer in the third quarter. Smith had 10 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Andrew King scored six points for the Cougars and Jalen Smith added five.

 

Jefferson 72, Musselman 65

INWOOD (March 5) – Jalen Smith scored 22 points and Jahlil Jenkins added 20 as Jefferson topped Musselman, 72-65, during first-round sectional tournament action.

Andrew King and Christian Johnson scored 10 points apiece for the Cougars (12-10), who overcame an early deficit and several first-half turnovers to knock off the Applemen in the postseason after dropping both regular season contests to Musselman.

Jefferson trailed 17-12 after the first quarter, but had tied the game at 28-28 by halftime. The Cougars never trailed during the second half en route to their first victory of the season against a conference opponent other than first-year program Spring Mills.

Delonte Berry and Mario Gonzalez netted four points apiece for Jefferson, and Michael Tennant scored two. – Jeff Brammer
