New trial date set for woman in War mayor’s death

WELCH (AP) — A new trial date has been set for a woman charged with conspiracy in the slaying of War Mayor Thomas Hatcher.

Media outlets report that 32-year-old Rebecca Lynn Hatcher’s retrial is set for June 2 in McDowell County Circuit Court. The mayor was her father-in-law.

Rebecca Hatcher was acquitted of first-degree murder last November. Circuit Judge Rudolph J. Murensky II declared a mistrial on the conspiracy charge.

Murensky set the new trial date Monday during a hearing.

City workers found the 72-year-old mayor’s body in his home on July 17, 2012. Prosecutors say he was smothered with a plastic bag.

Hatcher’s brother and co-defendant, Earl Click of Grundy, Va., was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy earlier this month. He is awaiting sentencing.
