W.Va. files suit against debt relief company

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia’s attorney general is suing a debt relief company.

The complaint filed in Kanawha County Circuit Court alleges Chicago-based Legal helpers Debt Resolution LLC violated state consumer protection laws by misrepresenting that its lawyers could provide debt relief services in the state. The attorney general’s office believes more than 250 West Virginians collectively paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in advance fees to help resolve debts, which were not paid.

The lawsuit alleges none of the company’s lawyers were licensed to practice in West Virginia, so the firm used third parties to act on its behalf.
