Shepherd men’s basketball team takes aim at conference following victory at Wheeling Jesuit

WHEELING (Jan. 18) – Junior guard Austin Cunningham scored a game-high 20 points to lead six Shepherd University players in double figures as the Rams handed Wheeling Jesuit an 87-82 setback in MEC men’s basketball action. Shepherd used a 10-0 run early in the second half to take a nine-point lead at 73-64 after a Naim Muhammad layup with 11:56 left.

Wheeling Jesuit rallied to within three points at 85-82 after a three-pointer by Eric Seifert with 28 seconds left, but Cunningham hit a pair of free throws 18 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Rams (13-3, 8-2). Cunningham connected on 5-of-14 shots with a 3-of-7 effort from beyond the arc. He was 7-for-9 from the foul line. He added four assists and three steals. Senior guard Brantley Osborne added a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 12 assists.

Muhammad, a freshman guard, added 14 points, six rebounds, and six steals, while junior forward Morgan McDonald tossed in 13 points and grabbed eight boards. Senior forward Kevin Jones added 10 points and sophomore guard Garett Burkhead tossed in 10 points off the bench in only eight minutes of action. Burkhead was 4-of-4 from the floor with a 2-of-2 effort from three-point range. Justin Fritts had 19 points and Kyle Ritz added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Cardinals (6-7, 4-6). Wheeling Jesuit had a 33-29 advantage on the boards.

The Rams forced 19 turnovers and committed 14. The Cardinals took a 47-43 lead into the break as Ritz poured in all his 16 points in the first half.

Women’s basketball

Wheeling Jesuit 92, Shepherd 83

WHEELING (Jan. 18) – Breanna Butler scored 19 points and Emily Robinson added 17 to lead Wheeling Jesuit to a 92-83 win over Shepherd University in MEC women’s basketball action.

Junior center Gabby Flinchum had a game-high 24 points to lead the Rams (2-12, 2-8). She hit on 7-of-9 field goals with a 10-of-11 effort from the foul line. Flinchum added six boards and three assists. Junior guard Rachel Johnson added 19 points and nine rebounds, while senior forward Jimyse Brown recorded a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Jaila Bryant had 14 points and Tylor Lubinsky added 11 for the Cardinals (7-7, 4-6). The Rams had a 40-36 edge in rebounds. Shepherd forced 12 turnovers and committed 13.
