Educator honored W.Va.’s Teacher of the Year

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — A Berkeley County teacher is being honored as West Virginia Teacher of the Year.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin joined State Schools Superintendent Jim Phares and others in presenting Erin Sponaugle with a new Toyota and a $5,000 check.

Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield West Virginia sponsors the cash prize and Toyota Motor Manufacturing West Virginia donated the new car for her to use for the year.

Sponaugle also will receive an educational technology package valued at nearly $15,000.

Sponaugle is a fifth-grade teacher at Tomahawk Intermediate Middle School. She has been a teacher for more than ten years.
