BAKERTON – Community members are expected to turn out this weekend as a local fire company hosts a basket bingo fundraiser for the family of a 10-year-old Blue Ridge Elementary School student who’s believed to have died from the flu.
Randy Ridgeway Jr. died Dec. 23 in Jefferson Medical Center in Ranson after suffering flu-like symptoms. Officials haven’t said whether the flu has officially been ruled as the cause of his death.
Friends organized a fund drive online and set up the bingo to help the family with funeral expenses and medical bills.
The boy’s father died in 2012. The money raised will help pay for funeral arrangements and medical bills.
Saturday’s bingo, co-sponsored by the Blue Ridge Mountain Volunteer Fire Co., will be held at Bakerton Fire Department, 891 Carter Ave. Doors open at 12:30 p.m. with bingo beginning at 2 p.m.
Tickets cost $25 and may be purchased in advance or at the door if seats are still available. All proceeds will go to the Randy Ridgeway Memorial Fund.
More information may be obtained by calling 304-876-0007.
Randy’s funeral was held Tuesday at Eackles-Spencer and Norton Funeral Home, Harpers Ferry, with the Rev. Phil Brumbach officiating. A fellowship luncheon at Blue Ridge Elementary School followed the service.
