Shepherd women give up 114 points

INSTITUTE — The Shepherd womens basketball team had 60 points scored against it in the first half and could never overcome a 21-point deficit in losing a 114-92 verdict to West Virginia State.

The latest Mountain East Conference loss left Shepherd with a 1-6 overall record and a 1-2 mark in the league. West Virginia State was 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the Mountain East Conference.

The game’s pace was hampered by the numerous fouls whistled against both teams. There were 27 fouls called against the Lady Yellow Jackets and 26 fouls called against Shepherd.

West Virginia State went 26-for-44 (59 percent) from the foul line and Shepherd was 29-of-40 (73 percent).

From the field, Shepherd was 30-for-82 (37 percent) while making only 3-of-18 (17 percent) three-point attempts. The Lady Yellow Jackets were 39-of-74 (53 percent) from the field and made 10-of-22 (46 percent) of their three-point attempts.

Shepherd had reserve guard Rachel Johnson (19 points), center Gabby Flinchum (18), reserve Jimyse Brown (13), Cara Mason (13) and Briana Vaden (13) score in double figures. Flinchum had 12 of Shepherd’s 42 rebounds.

Lexy Carson tossed in a game-high 27 points and Jordon Brock had 18 points to pace five double-figure scorers for West Virginia State. Shealyn Shafer (13 points) had a game-high 15 rebounds and Asia Greenleaf had 10 rebounds for the winners.
