HEDGESVILLE — With Steven Solomon and Shawn Carden each scoring 11 points, Morgantown High defeated Jefferson in the first round of the Hedgesville Mixer Tournament sponsored by Gold’s Gym.
Carden and Scottie Core both had six rebounds for the Mohigans.
Jefferson couldn’t avoid its first loss of the season even though freshman Jahlil Jenkins scored 16 points for the Cougars, then 2-1 overall after opening the 2013-14 season with wins at home against Silver Oak Academy (Md.) and Park View (Va.).
On Saturday night in the Hedgesville Mixer Tournament, Jefferson dropped a 68-63 decision to Sherando (Va.).
The Warriors had postponed basketball games because its football team was playing into December and actually reached the state championship game before falling to Dinwiddie High.
Jalen Smith scored a team-high 19 points and claimed seven rebounds for the Cougars, who were 2-2 overall following a second loss in two nights.
Jenkins followed up his high-scoring game on Friday against Morgantown with another 18 points and Andrew King added 17 points and six rebounds against the Warriors.
This weekend, Jefferson travels a short distance to another two-night tournament, this one held at North Hagerstown High School. Jefferson has its first game in the event on Friday, Dec. 27, with a listed starting time of 5 p.m. On Saturday, Dec. 28, the Cougars list the starting time of their game at 6:30 p.m. at the high school on Pennsylvania Avenue.
