VFW chief visits Charles Town

William A. Thien, commander-in-chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, paid a visit to Jefferson County Memorial VFW Post 3522 Nov. 20 to help encourage the recruitment of younger veterans into the organization. It was the first time in memory that the national leader of the veterans’ organization had visited Charles Town. Thien emphasized the importance of growing membership in the organization in order to stave off cuts in veterans’ benefits programs in the face of a push for federal austerity policies.
