ST. MARYS (AP) — Inmates at St. Marys Correctional Center grew nearly 6,000 pounds of produce this year as part of the state’s Harvest Now program.
Warden Patrick Mirandy says that the prison gave about 4,500 pounds of produce to Mountaineer Food Bank. The prison used another 1,500 pounds to provide fresh food to inmates during the growing season.
Mirandy says four inmates from the prison’s residential substance abuse treatment unit did most of the plowing, planting and cultivation.
Several other minimum- and medium security prisons in the state also participated in the Harvest Now program. Mountaineer Food Bank says it received a total estimated 10,000 pounds of produce grown by inmates.
Harvest Now began in Connecticut in 2008.
