BLUEFIELD (AP) — Three dozen lawsuits filed against the maker of Lipitor in McDowell County have been moved to federal court.
The lawsuits allege that the cholesterol drug isn’t safe. They claim that Lipitor is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, blindness and other ailments.
The cases were filed in September in McDowell County Circuit Court. They were moved to U.S. District Court in Bluefield last week. Some cases involve multiple plaintiffs.
The drug’s maker, Pfizer Inc., denies the allegations in a response filed last week in federal court.
Pfizer’s response says that Lipitor has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration. Pfizer also says that the risks, if any, associated with using Lipitor are outweighed by its utility.
