Man convicted of leaving boy in hot car in W.Va.

WHEELING (AP) — An Ohio County jury has convicted a man accused of leaving his stepson locked in a hot car.

Media outlets report that an Ohio County Circuit Court jury convicted 25-year-old Stephen Clemens on a child neglect charge last week.

The jury also convicted Clemens of entering without breaking. A sentencing date hasn’t been set.

Police say Clemens and the 9-year-old boy’s mother left the child locked in a car at the Highlands shopping complex in July while they tried to shoplift.

A shopper saw the boy inside the vehicle and told a sheriff’s deputy.

The boy’s mother, Jeanette Darnley, pleaded guilty to child neglect last week and testified against Clemens.
