ROMNEY — The weather was cold and the wind made it a raw day for the Class AAA, Region II cross country runners.
Even with the ill-timed conditions, some of Jefferson’s boys had personal bests and the team collectively turned away all the probes at keeping the Cougars from repeating their 2012 region championship.
Andrew Milliron (16:47.60) and Jackson Jacobs (16:59.40) led the Jefferson charge to another Region II title by finishing 1-2 in the individual standings. Jefferson’s team total was 49.
Jonathan Royster brought his best effort of the season to the Regional, and he finished 11th overall with a time of 18:24.70. Rhett Zillinger was 14th overall and wasn’t far behind Royster with his clocking of 18:31.30.
Jefferson’s final runner to count toward the team’s point total was freshman Dylan Stamper, who was 21st overall in a time of 19:01.60.
All seven of Jefferson’s individual runners will be competing in this weekend’s State Meet to be held in Ona on the home course of Cabell Midland High School.
Delmar Hagedorn (19:27.40) and Colin Hayes (19:31.50), both freshmen like Stamper, will also be competing in the State Meet.
Elkins was the second-place team with 64 points. Both third-place Musselman (77) and fourth-place Hampshire (80) also qualified their complete teams for the State Meet.
Washington finished sixth in the 10-team standings. Washington’s one finisher in the meet’s top 28 runners was Kendall Coles, who was 12th overall in a time of 18:25.10.
