ROMNEY — With Malika Briggs and Anya Wallace providing decisive backup for Abby Colbert’s winning effort at the Class AAA, Region II girls cross country meet at Hampshire High School, it was Jefferson High winning the event by a significant margin over runner-up Hampshire and third-place Musselman.
Those three schools qualified their complete teams for this week’s state meet in Ona.
Colbert was not menaced by any of the other runners and she recorded a winning time of 19:45.60 for the hilly course that had a small creek to cross.
Briggs, who had finished races and meets during the regular season behind Wallace and ninth-place Emma Lindberg, was able to better both those teammates over the windy and hill-laden course.
Briggs was fourth overall and was timed in 21:28.50. Wallace was fifth overall with her finishing time of 21:29.90.
Lindberg was Jefferson’s fourth individual finisher and she was timed in 22:06.90. The Lady Cougars’ fifth and final individual to count toward the team point total was 11th-place Nathalie Walker (22:09.00).
Washington’s top individual was Destiny Harrison, third overall with her clocking of 21:22.30. Harrison earned a spot in the State Meet because she finished in the Top 10 individuals on a team that didn’t qualify for the Ona-based meet.
The Patriots’ Catrina Russell was eighth overall (earning her a spot at the State Meet) and Megan Carr was 17th overall.
Jefferson’s team-winning point total was 30. Hampshire was back in second place with 54 points and third-place Musselman had 82 points.
Washington (103 points) was fifth in the nine-team standings.
The Class AAA State Meet takes place at Cabell Midland High School in Ona on Saturday.
Jefferson will be one of the four Regional champions there.
