Two goals enough for Patriots
CHARLES TOWN — Cole Reistrup finally broke up the scoreless boys soccer game between Washington and visiting Springs Mills when he scored against the Cardinals. The Patriots then counted Mesfin Butera’s second-half goal en route to a 2-1 victory on Aug. 21 at Marcus Field.
The Patriots carried a 2-0 lead deep into the second half before the Cardinals got their only goal from Adrien Inman.
It was Washington’s season opener, making the Patriots 1-0-0.
Losses behind, Patriots blank Cardinals
CHARLES TOWN — After absorbing two losses on the road to begin its girls soccer season, Washington High made its first home game a winning one, stopping Spring Mills, 7-0, at Marcus Field.
Atley Fortney scored first for the Patriots. Haely Ramirez’s goal made it 2-0. Olivia Dominski had an assist on Ramirez’s goal.
Ramirez would eventually score three of Washington’s seven goals. Brogan Pierce and McKenzie Turner scored goals. Turner would be credited with three assists in the shutout win that lifted Wasington’s record to 1-2-0. Kaleigh Pierce had an assist on Turner’s last goal. Kaleigh Pierce had Washington’s final goal. Kylie Nelson was the goalkeeper in the shutout win.
Still unscored upon, Cougars stop Eagles
SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — With goalkeeper Ethan Forrest turning away Hedgesville’s offensive thrusts, the Jefferson High boys soccer team tamed the Eagles, 3-0, to remain unscored upon and unbeaten with a 2-0-0 record.
Tucker Ryan had Jefferson’s first goal at about the 15-minute mark of the first half.
With the score still 1-0 midway through the last half, the Cougars jumped the lead to 2-0 with Brett Stuart’s quick-reaction goal. In the waning minutes, Stuart scored his second goal after a nifty assist pass from Miles Dixon-Gross.
The loss for the Eagles came in their season opener.
Lady Cougars keep Hedgesville scoreless
HEDGESVILLE — Jefferson’s defense generally controlled whatever the Hedgesville girls tried and eventually posted a 4-0 shuout win over the Lady Eagles in a girls soccer game between the Sectional rivals.
Jefferson advanced its overall record to 1-0-1 after opening in Morgantown with a 1-1 tie against University.
