CHARLES TOWN – The County Commission will hold a special meeting this morning to consider whether to award former county administrator Leslie Smith a contract of up to $10,000 to review the county’s stretched budget.
Smith was fired by the commission in 2009 after 20 years as administrator in a contentious 3-2 vote. She later sued the commission for wrongful termination, and settled out of court for $225,000. The commission did not admit to any wrongdoing.
The county spent around $1 million more than it took in in revenue last year, and has implemented a hiring freeze until this year’s property taxes begin flowing in. Last week, commissioners agreed to enter contract negotiations for the vacant position of finance director.
