Patriot girls return 0-2
MORGANTOWN — Washington High took a two-day trip to Morgantown to open its girls soccer season. In its first game of the 2013 campaign on Friday, the Patriots dropped a 3-1 decision to homestanding University High. On Saturday, Washington faced Morgantown High before returning to the Eastern Panhandle to open the home portion of its schedule.
The Lady Mohigans trimmed the Patriots, 2-0, to deal Washington its second loss of the season. Both University and Morgantown were unbeaten. University was 1-0-1.
Washington had an 0-2-0 record. The first home game is on Tuesday against visiting Martinsburg.
Cougars finish 3rd
CHARLES TOWN — Hedgesville easily outdistanced three other golf teams in winning a quad match played at the Sleepy Hollow Golf Course. The Eagles had a team score of 177, compared with second-place Muselman’s 192, third-place Jefferson’s 204 and fourth-place Spring Mills’ 226.
The low medalist for the nine-hole round was Hedgesville’s Owen Elliott, who carded a 40. Jefferson’s Patrick Glenn tied for second with two others with a 44.
Jefferson in 1-1 tie vs. Hawks
MORGANTOWN — Jefferson’s defense stood out when the Lady Cougars opened their soccer season with a 1-1 tie against University High on Saturday. Goalkeeper Shelby Spencer totaled 17 saves for JHS. Kat Hussion had Jefferson’s only goal with Jessica Shakespere getting credit for an assist.
Both teams had 0-0-1 records.
Cougars blank University
MORGANTOWN — A shutout win over homestanding University High was the way the Jefferson boys soccer team opened the 2013 season on Saturday.
The Cougars moved past usually strong University, 3-0, to get the new season underway.
Jefferson was 1-0-0. The Cougars faced Hedgesville at home last night. After games on the road at both Hampshire and Spring Mills, the Cougars come home to face St. Maria Goretti on Sept. 5.
