Patriots edge Woodgrove

CHARLES TOWN — With Dylan Mumaw (75), Hunter Hardy (81), Patrick Burgess (84) and Jacob Shuff (84) leading the way, Washington edged visiting Woodgrove, 324-325, in a golf match played at the Locust Hill course.

Mumaw’s round was good enough to get him medalist honors.

Michael Briel fired a round of 76 for the Wolverines.




Rain softens course, Patriots stop Eagles

CHARLES TOWN — After overnight rains softened the Sleepy Hollow golf course and threatened to cancel the match altogether between Washington, Jefferson, Spring Mills, Berkeley Springs, Musselman and Hedgesville, the area teams got the 18 holes in with Jacob Shuff’s round of 79 leading Coach Rusty Staubs’ Washington team to a win.

Hedgesville’s Owen Elliott was the day’s medalist with his 78.

Washington’s Dylan Mumaw recorded an 83 and the Patriots’ Patrick Burgess also toured the dampened course with an 83. The Patriots had Shuff, Mumaw and Burgess all finish in the day’s top five scorers.

Jefferson was able to tie Berkeley Springs for third.




Shepherd gets 25th in national preseason ranking

SHEPHERDSTOWN — By a vote of a large panel of NCAA Division II football coaches, Shepherd was ranked 25th in the nation. The first preseason poll of the coaches placed defending national champion Valdosta (Ga.) State first. The rest of the top five had Minnesota State-Mankato, West Texas A&M, Northwest Missouri State and Winston-Salem State.

Shepherd’s opening game opponent, Shippensburg, was ranked seventh in the initial poll. Other teams ranked from Super Region One, which is where Shepherd is stationed, were No. 10 Indiana (Pa.), No. 12 New Haven and No. 18 Bloomsburg (Pa.).

The Rams open on Sept. 7 at home against the Red Raiders.




Rams baseball tryout scheduled

SHEPHERDSTOWN — Shepherd will hold an open, walk-on baseball tryout on Sept. 3 at 2 p.m. at Fairfax Field. Those trying out must present physical and sickle cell results and are expected to bring their own baseball equipment and dress properly. It will be a pro-style workout or pro tryout camp format.





Rams softball tryout set Sept. 9

SHEPHERDSTOWN — The Shepherd softball team will have an open, walk-on tryout on Sept. 9 at 3:30 p.m. at the school softball field. All interested students are expected to attend a meeting on Aug. 26 at 4:30 p.m. in Room 118 of the Butcher Center.
