CHARLES TOWN — The Jefferson Wildcats will be joined by Senior American Legion (ages 19 and under) teams from Romney, Berkeley County, and Petersburg/Moorefield in this week’s double elimination Area Tournament being played in Romney. The winner of the four-team event will qualify for the West Virginia state tournament in Morgantown at WVU’s Hawley Field.
Jefferson has players from Jefferson High and Washington High and is coached by Buzzy Jackson.
On Thursday the tournament begins at Hampshire High School. The Area Tournament is scheduled to play its first game at 6 p.m. On Friday, the schedule shows another 6 p.m. opening. Over the weekend, the event has a 12-noon beginning on both Saturday and Sunday.
In its last two games of the regular season, the Wildcats defeated Berkeley Post 14 both times the teams met at Musselman High.
Jefferson’s roster has 18 players listed, but it is unlikely all 18 will be in Romney for the tournament.
Coach Jackson has possible starting pitchers in Logan Maloney, Jared Silva, Cody Butts, Casey Billmyer, Dennis Jackson, Matt LaFollette, Drew Hetzel, Kyle Boone and F. Brown.
Outfielders on the Wildcat roster are Anthony DiAmario, Dylan MacIntosh, Boone and Jackson. The catchers are Seth Campbell and Matt Henshaw.
Jackson’s infielders include Brandt Petrie, Paul Witt, Garrett Everton and Cody McDowell along with Silva, Billmyer and Jackson. Berkeley Post 14 has players from Musselman, Martinsburg and Hedgesville high schools. Host Romney has its roster stocked with players from Hampshire High and Potomac Valley takes its players primarily from Moorefield and Petersburg high schools. The state tournament begins in Morgantown on July 28.
