Cat adoption: The Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County is offering special days to provide cats with a home. Hours will be extended to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Special adoption rates are $40/cat or $75 for two. All adoptions free for anyone over 55. Special rates for senior cats. Visit for more information.

Donate: The Animal Welfare Society of Jefferson County is participating in Applebee’s Dining to Donate program. Dine at Applebee’s in Charles Town from 11 a.m. to closing Thursday and 20 percent of your bill will be donated to the Animal Welfare Society.


Breakfast and portraits: The Shepherdstown Fire Department’s Junior Firefighter program will host a pancake breakfast and family portraits event from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Shepherdstown Train Station. Dinner: The Boys & Girls Club of the Eastern Panhandle will host the 2013 Elimination Dinner and Silent Auction fundraiser starting at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Parish School in Martinsburg. Tickets are $50 per couple. To purchase tickets, call 304-263-1832.

Tryouts: The 12u Summit Point Tsunami Girls Softball Team will be having tryouts for the 2013-2014 season from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday for a workout session and from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday for the official tryout. Mobile office visit: A staff member from the office of Congresswoman Shelley Moore Capito will be at the Jefferson County Senior Center in Ranson from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Soccer tryouts: Tryouts for the Fall 2013 Boys Soccer team will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 5 through 8 at Terry Marcus Field. Tryouts are mandatory in order to participate. All players will need to provide a current/valid physical form, AD questionnaire, and insurance waiver in order to participate.

Welcome service: The Bolivar United Methodist Church will welcome Pastor John Unger II and his wife Cara to the church with a special service and potluck luncheon starting at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 11. The church will furnish the chicken, rolls and beverages. Bring a favorite dish to share.
