With enough quality arms, the Jefferson County Wildcats Junior American Legion coaches have given their roster of 13 players a summer schedule full of games.
[cleeng_content id="366850162" description="Read it now!" price="0.49" t="article"]Through June 7, the Wildcats had already played 10 times, winning six and showing opponents like Mt. Airy, Frostburg, Williamsport and Cecil County low-run pitchers in Ryan French, Mark McKee, Trevor Pansch, Paul Witt, Hunter Weaver and Zac Burch.
The Wildcats also play Cumberland, Woodsboro, Brunswick, Damascus, Sykesville, the Black Bears travel team and Berkeley County and could show those teams additional pitchers in Andy Disque and Tyler Mattei.
Nine of the players on Coach Ken Carroll’s team played at Washington High this past spring. Besides the pitchers French, McKee, Pansch, Weaver and Burch the others from Washington are Bryan Bayliss, Ty Carroll and Corey Lewis. Just about every player can play more than one position and several of them are infielders or outfielders before they are pitchers.
Four of the Junior Wildcats played on Jefferson’s varsity team this year and they are Witt, Disque, Brody Price and Will Oliver.
Jefferson’s latest win was an 8-7 verdict over Williamsport where the Wildcats yielded a tying run in the top of the seventh but then scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning.
The other five wins came against Frostburg, FBR, Frederick, and twice against Gaithersburg. The four losses were twin shutouts (3-0 and 2-0) against Cecil County, to Mt. Airy and to Woodsboro.
Home games are rotated to some extent between Washington High and Jefferson’s Sager Field in Shenandoah Junction.
The rest of the June portion of the schedule shows the Junior Wildcats at home (JHS) on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. vs. Cumberland; on Saturday at home (WHS) at 11 a.m. against Frostburg; on Sunday at Gaithersburg; on Monday at home (WHS) at 6 p.m. against the Black Bears; on June 18th at home (WHS) at 5:30 p.m. against Woodsboro; on June 19 at home (WHS) at 6 p.m. against Brunswick and on June 20th at home (WHS) at 5:30 p.m. versus Woodsboro.
The last five games in June come on June 22nd at Sykesville; on June 24th at 7 p.m. against Berkeley County at P.O. Faulkner Park in Martinsburg; on June 25th at home (JHS) at 5:30 p.m. versus Damascus; on June 27th at home (WHS) at 6 p.m. versus Frederick and on June 28th at Woodsboro.
Even with 13 players and four 5:30 p.m. doubleheaders scheduled, the Junior Wildcats have enough pitching if everybody is available on a given night.[/cleeng_content]
