Shepherd keeps McCarty as coach

SHEPHERDSTOWN — After leading the Shepherd baseball team to a 28-20 record and second place in the North Division of the old WVIAC this past season, baseball coach Matt McCarty has been elevated from the school’s “interim” coach to the full-time head baseball coach.

McCarty, a 2010 Shepherd graduate, played on the 2009 WVIAC championship team at the school and was an assistant coach when the Rams won the 2012 conference championship under Coach Wayne Riser, now the head coach at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.

At the same time McCarty was named the school’s head baseball coach, interim assistant coach Anthony Jackson was made the full-time assistant coach. Jackson also played on Shepherd’s 2009 championship team and was an assistant with the 2012 team.

Shepherd moves into the newly-created Mountain East Conference for the 2013-14 season in all sports.
