Cannons reach 3rd place

Team is back at home on Friday vs. Royals

SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — With a 6-4 road win over Aldie on Monday night, the Charles Town Cannons moved ahead into third place in the North Division of the Valley Baseball League.

[cleeng_content id="129525520" description="Read it now!" price="0.49" t="article"]The win moved the Cannons record to 9-10 and had them percentage points ahead of fourth-place Front Royal (8-9) and fifth-place Aldie (7-8).

Adam Parks (Liberty University) went the first six innings to get the win and Logan Boyd (Sam Houston State) got credit for a save with his three hitless and scoreless innings in closing for the Cannons.

Parks allowed five hits, walked four and fanned eight in notching the win. His ERA is 1.90. Boyd struck out four Senators and walked two while lowering his ERA to 7.30.

Shane Ammon (Texas-Pan America) went 3-for-5, Ty Michelotti (Arkansas State) was 2-for-4 and L.K. Thompson (Florida International) was 2-for-4 to pace the Cannons’ 11-hit offense.

On Sunday, the Cannons dropped a 7-6 extra inning verdict to Winchester. Charles Town used six pitchers with Steve McClellan (Lake Sumter CC) taking the loss when the Royals scored a run off him in the 11th inning.

Mike Estevez (Alabama State) went the first 5.1 innings and yielded only two hits but his four walks hurt him. He was followed by Logan Traylor (Auburn), Ryan Morse (Furman), Steve Burnham (Florida Southern) and Connor McClain (Central Arkansas) before McClellan came on in the 10th.

The Cannons had 12 hits off Royals’ pitching with Pat Ammar (Wheeling Jesuit) going 3-for-4, Waldyvan Estrada (Alabama State) going 2-for-4 and Matt Durst (Northeast Texas) also going 2-for-4.

Jake Johnson (Neosho County CC) gave the Cannons eight solid innings on Saturday as the Cannons defeated Waynesboro, 6-1. Johnson allowed only three hits while fanning three and walking four. He lowered his ERA to 2.33.

McClain finished with a scoreless inning.

Michelotti was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. He had a triple and also stole his eighth base of the season. Durst slugged his second homer of the summer and both Dillon Cooper (Alabama State) and Luke Stewart (Jacksonville) were 2-for-5.

On Friday, the Cannons lost a 13-8 slugfest to Staunton.

Charles Town collected 14 hits and so did the winning Braves.

Tyler Hibbert (Florida International) raised his batting average temporarily to .382 with a 4-for-5 night. Michelotti was 4-for-6 with two RBIs. Durst went 2-for-4 and Estrada was 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

The Braves had a five-run third inning and a six-run fifth inning to overcome a 7-1 lead the Cannons had after only one inning of play.

Talton Cherry (Mt. Olive) lasted only 2.1 innings and left after yielding five hits and four runs. David Rumsey (Sam Houston State) inherited a lead but lasted only two-thirds of an inning before being replaced by Boyd. Boyd took the loss when permitting six hits and six earned runs in only 2.1 innings.

Ryan Morse (Furman) did well enough in his 2.2 innings of hitless pitching where he struck out five and walked two while allowing a run. Traylor finished with a scoreless inning.

Woodstock continues to lead the North Division with its 12-3 record. Strasburg is in second place with an 8-8 mark, leading the Cannons by only a half-game. Winchester trails in sixth place with its 5-12 record.

The standings in the South Division see Harrisonburg leading with a 12-5 record. New Market (12-7), Staunton (11-8), Waynesboro (8-10), Rockbridge (8-11) and Covington (4-13) trail the Turks.

Michelotti led the Cannons with his .361 batting average after the first 18 games. Estrada was hitting .347 and was second in RBIs with 14. Hibbert was 14-for-43 for a .326 batting average. Hayden Cronenbold (Oklahoma State) was at .288 and Durst led the team in RBIs with 15 and was hitting .279.

Cronenbold and Michelotti both had nine stolen bases and Michelotti and Estrada had both scored 10 runs.

Chris Payne (George Mason) was 2-0 with a 1.10 ERA in his three pitching starts. Alex Hackerott (Oklahoma State) was 1-1 in his two starts with a 1.58 ERA. McClain had appeared in seven games as had Traylor. McClain had a 1-0 record with a save and a 1.68 ERA.

Parks was 2-1 with a 1.89 ERA and Johnson was 2-2 with a 2.33 ERA.

The Cannons had a .274 team batting average and a team ERA of 3.23.

Shepherd University left-handed pitcher Paul Hvozdovic was 2-0 with three starts and a complete game with Front Royal. Hvozdovic had 1.17 ERA in 23 innings of work. He had fanned 16 and walked only five.

The Cannons next home game is on Friday when they host Winchester at 7 p.m. at Sager Field at Jefferson High.
