SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — Washington repeated its oft-won Region II girls tennis championship when it held off Martinsburg’s threat, scoring 24 points to the Lady Bulldogs’ 17. Jefferson was seventh in the field of nine girls teams.
Giving Washington wins in singles were both Amber Barr at No. 3 and Dori Sanders at No. 4. Both Barr and Sanders qualified for this week’s Class AAA state tournament which begins in Charleston on Thursday.
Barr defeated Hannah Beck (Martinsburg), 9-8 (8-6) in the finals at No. 3. Sanders stopped Buckhannon’s Marlene Ridgeway, 8-2, in the finals at No. 4.
The Patriots’ Jill Spuria/Amber Barr won the No. 1 doubles title and will be going to Charleston in that event. Mackenzie Littleton/Sanders were able to win the No. 3 doubles bracket and qualified for the state tournament. Spuria in No. 1 singles and Littleton in No. 2 singles also qualified for the state tournament.
The boys division of the Region II tournament was won by Martinsburg when it outpointed the Patriots, 25-21.
Jefferson was fifth in the field of nine boys teams.
Three of Washington’s singles players — No. 1 Will Wheatley, No. 2 Cullen Irving and No. 3 Austin Thomas — qualified for the Charleston-based Class AAA state tournament beginning on Thursday.
Will Wheatley, Irving and Thomas also qualified for the state meet in Charleston in doubles play. Will Wheatley/Thomas lost an 8-4 decision in the championship round in No. 1 doubles. Washington’s Trenton Littleton/Becker Junkin also qualified in doubles for the state tournament. Jefferson High had Isaac Washington finish as the runner-up in No. 2 singles and give the Cougar boys their lone representative at the state tournament.
