May 22 in history

Bailey Brown, the first Union combat death recorded in the Civil War, dies on May 22, 1861, in his native Taylor County. A 32-year-old private, Brown is buried in Grafton National Cemetery.

On May 22, 1933, the modern primary school system is created by the Legislature. Out went independent and magisterial school districts, to be replaced by 55 county school boards.

On May 22, 1992, 66-year-old Johnny Carson (right) for the final time hosts “The Tonight Show.” He’d been the host of NBC’s late-night staple for 30 years.
