CHARLES TOWN — Jefferson jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three Sectional tournament softball series with county rival Washington when it posted a 3-1 win in the event’s opener.

Jefferson pitcher Alexandra Witt controlled the Patriot bats, doling out five hits. Williams had two of the hits off Witt.
Both teams had multiple chances to score, but both teams stranded runners in scoring position to keep the run totals in check. The Lady Cougars wrapped up the tournament championship with a 5-1 win over the Patriots in the event’s second game that was played at Washington High.
Again, it was Jefferson pitcher Alexandra Witt mostly in control of the Washington batting order. Witt fanned nine. Devin Williams was Washington’s pitcher and she also fanned nine.
Witt had a 1-0 lead after she tripled in the second and scored when Shelby McTighe grounded out. Witt’s second triple plated her sister, Jenna, moving the Jefferson lead to 2-0. McTighe’s second RBI also came on a groundout. The Lady Cougars led, 4-0, when Mallory Jackson singled home Alexandra Witt.
Washington’s only run came on Williams’ sacrifice fly that counted Alycia Lambert.
In its half of the seventh, Washington loaded the bases but couldn’t score.
Witt’s win helped move Jefferson’s overall record to 18-8. Washington finished 10-15.[/cleeng_content]
