SHENANDOAH JUNCTION — Washington High won its fifth straight Potomac Valley Conference girls tennis championship when it totaled 19 points in Friday’s one-day tournament held at Jefferson High.
Jill Spuria defeated Musselman’s Madeline Flanagan, 8-1, in the finals in No. 1 singles. Amber Barr was the No. 3 singles titleist with an 8-3 win over Hedgesville’s Alexa Cincinnati in the finals at No. 2 singles. Dori Sanders gave the Patriots another singles title when she won in the finals at No. 4 with her victory over Martinsburg’s Sadie Tucker.
Washington’s doubles titles came at No. 2 where Mackenzie Littleton/Sanders were the bracket winners, and at No. 3 where Jessica Barr/Molly Banfield took the championship.
Washington finished with 19 points with Martinsburg in second with 10 points, Hedgesville next with seven, Musselman in fourth with five points and then Jefferson with one point.
Martinsburg’s Molly Beck defeated Washington’s Littleton to win the No. 2 singles title.
In the boys division, it was Martinsburg snapping Washington’s PVC team winning streak by scoring 19 points to claim the conference championship. The Patriots were second with 14 points, followed by Musselman with four points, Jefferson with two points and Hedgesville with two points.
The Bulldogs won individual titles at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4. Those champions were gained by Grant Davis, Carter Davis and Inigo Goiriena. Washington’s Austin Thomas won the tournament’s No. 3 singles title.
Washington’s lone doubles victory came at No. 3 where Trenton Littleton/Becker Junkin prevailed in the finals, 8-3, over Ben Frye/Andy Calo.
The Patriots had won PVC boys titles in 2012, 2011 and 2010.
