TENNERTON — With Lauren Lewis slugging a first-inning home run and Alexandra Witt authoring a complete-game nine-hitter on Friday, Jefferson moved past homestanding Buckhannon, 6-3, to win the Class AAA, Region II softball championship.
[cleeng_content id="328874875" description="Read it now!" price="0.15" t="article"]The Lady Cougars will take a 20-8 overall record into today’s state tournament first-round game against Region IV champion, Ripley. Ripley brings a 23-10 record to the double-elimination state tournament in Vienna.
The other two teams in the state event are Wheeling Park (20-5) and Hurricane (30-6). The Patriots and Redskins play in the other first-round game.
Witt’s complete game was her fourth straight postseason victory. She walked only one and fanned three Lady Buccaneer batters.
Lewis early homer gave the Lady Cougars a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, the Lady Cougars quickly advanced their lead to 5-0 as Jenna Witt and Alexandra Witt had RBI singles.
Buckhannon got its first run off Witt in the fourth when Sarah Ling had an RBI single that plated Claire Davis.
The Jefferson lead was back at five runs when Jenna Wilt belted a solo homer in the fifth.
Leading, 6-1, the Lady Cougars faced adversity in the Buckhannon half of the fifth when Davis had a two-run double that left the Jefferson lead at only 6-3.
Even though Jefferson could not score in either of the last two innings, Witt was able to blank the Lady Buccaneers in both the sixth and seventh to nail down the Regional championship.
Jefferson was a state tournament participant several years ago and is back again.
The state tournament schedule calls for four games on the first day. Jefferson and Ripley meet in the day’s second game, which is scheduled for 30 minutes after the 9:30 a.m. opener between Wheeling Park and Hurricane ends.
The losers of the first two games will meet at 4:30 p.m. and then the winners of the first two games will play 30 minutes after that game ends.
On Thursday, the tournament continues and the state championship game is scheduled for 2 p.m. that day.
