CHARLESTON — George Washington won the boys division of the Class AAA state tennis tournament. The Patriots had 19 points to move past runner-up Huntington’s 13 points.
Washington High was tied for fifth with three points. Jefferson High didn’t score.
Huntington High was the Class AAA girls division state champion with 16 points. Runners-up Hurricane and Morgantown each had nine points. Washington High finished in a tie for seventh with two points.
Washington’s points in the boys bracket came when No. 1 singles player Will Wheatley defeated Princeton’s Will Robertson (8-4) in the first round. Wheatley was beaten, 8-4, by Wheeling Park’s Saaman Ghodsi in the quarterfinals; Austin Thomas posted an 8-4 win in his first match at No. 3 singles, but lost a 6-2, 6-2 match to Zach Koenig in the next round; W. Wheatley/Thomas defeated Jones/Robinson (Princeton) in the first round of No. 1 doubles but lost their next match.
The Patriots had points from No. 2 singles player Mackenzie Littleton when she won, 8-3, over Jordyn O’Dell (George Washington) in her first match. Katie Huck (Huntington) defeated Littleton, 8-2, in the next round; and Littleton/Dori Sanders at No. 2 doubles won a quarterfinal match before losing in the semifinals.
