WHEELING – Willaim Lawrence was sentenced to three years of probation Monday after pleading guilty to one count of knowingly selling a firearm to a convicted felon. Lawrence had faced a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Prosecutors said Lawrence, a gun collector who sold rifles and shotguns at the Harpers Ferry Flea Market, sold six handguns to an unnamed felon – who had been previously convicted of robbery, burglary and procuring the sexual exploitation of a child – between July and September 2012.
Lawrence was a teacher for 30 years, is a veteran, and is the father of Del. Tiffany Lawrence.
Lawrence told Judge John Preston Bailey that he would never repeat his mistake, if given a second chance.
“I made a mistake in judgement that will haunt me for the rest of my life,” Lawrence said. “I will redeem myself if given the opportunity.”
