Who should be the 2013 Jefferson County Citizen of the Year? Officials with the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce are accepting nominations from the public through June 5. The winner will be announced June 26 at the chamber’s annual awards banquet at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. The Spirit of Jefferson sponsors the Citizen of the Year award. The award committee is looking for someone who has contributed to the Jefferson County community in many ways over a period of years. To nominate someone, write a paragraph explaining why the person is deserving. Include individual accomplishments and community organizations to which the nominee has given effort. Tennis tournament: The first of five Junior USTA tennis tournaments will be held at Jefferson Memorial Park starting May 25. For details, call 304-725-7929.

GED classes: The Jill S. Weekley Learning Center at James Rumsey Technical Institute offers free programs to students 16 or older who are out of the public school system. Orientations are set for Monday and May 31 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Call 304-754-9712 for details.

Immunization reminder: Students who will be seniors at Jefferson or Washington high schools in August must bring proof of Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) anytime during their teen years and MCV4 (meningitis) if the first dose was given after the age of 16. If the first dose was given before age 16, a second dose is required.

Tennis program: City of Charles Town officials offer a summer tennis program for kids ages 3 to 18. Registration costs $65 for the first child and $35 for each additional child.
