Top citizen nominations: The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for this year’s Citizen of the Year through June 5. The winner will be announced June 26 at the Chamber’s annual awards banquet at Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races. The Spirit of Jefferson sponsors the Citizen of the Year award, which dates to 1979. Nominations must include a paragraph that explains why the nominee is deserving. Include individual accomplishments and community organizations to which the nominee has contributed. GED classes: The Jill S. Weekley Learning Center at James Rumsey Technical Institute offers a variety of free programs to students 16 and older who are out of the public school system. All classes are free. Orientation dates for this month are May 20 and May 31 from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. or Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. The learning center is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Immunization reminder: Parents of Jefferson County Schools’ seniors for school year 2013-2014 are must have proof of the following immunizations to start school: Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) anytime during their teen years and MCV4 (Meningitis) if the first dose was given after their child turns 16. If the first dose was given before turning 16 a second dose is required. Immunizations must be up to date in order for a student to enter school. When the immunizations are complete, the student and/or parent must provide a copy to the high school nurse so school records can be updated. These immunizations are state required for the 2013-2014 school year.


Books needed: The Friends of Shepherdstown Library is currently seeking book donations for its Mother’s Day weekend book sale fundraising event. Books should be delivered to the War Memorial Building in Shepherdstown between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. May 8, 9 and 10. New and used adult fiction and nonfiction books, DVDs, children’s books and other print favorites are needed.


Families needed for exchange student: The Rotary Club of Shepherdstown is looking for three local families to host a Danish student during the next school year as part of Rotary International’s Youth Exchange program.
