CHARLES TOWN – Jefferson County’s Peter Smith was one of three individuals to be honored by the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation on April 12, when he received the Spirit of the Panhandle award.
The Spirit of the Panhandle Award recognizes regional volunteers for service to their community.
A former journalist and press secretary for three different United States Senators, Smith has shared his writing and organizational talents for over a decade on behalf of the Potomac Valley Audubon Society.
During his tenure as PVAS President, the organization acquired three significant new protected properties.
An active Rotarian, Smith also has played key roles in the successes of the Shepherdstown Signature Events and Legacy Committee’s events and ceremonies, is an active member of the Shepherdstown Men’s Club, and is a founding member of the Two Rivers Giving Circle.
The two other recipients of the Spirit of the Panhandle were Pat Murphy of Berkeley County and Larry Lower of Morgan County.
