Washington baseball opens on Saturday

Washington opens its fifth baseball season in school history as the defending Class AAA, Region II, Section 1 champion.

The 2012 team defeated Musselman in the first game of the Region II tournament before falling a game short of the state tournament when it lost to Bridgeport.

The Patriots begin the 2013 season at home on Saturday at 1 p.m. against St. Maria Goretti. Only two seniors (Ryan Pansch and Austin Larcomb) were lost from the 2012 team.

Returning starters for Coach Mark Hash are catcher Seth Campbell, infielders Dorian Hetzel, Hunter Weaver, and Ryan Mumaw and outfielders Drew Hetzel and Colin Gustines. Junior right-hander Jared Silva is Hash’s most experienced pitcher.

Brian Bayliss and Kaleb Dan had a number of starts last season.

Immediately following the season opener against the Gaels will be games on Tuesday, March 19, at Musselman at 6 p.m., and then on Friday, March 22, at home at 4:30 p.m. against Martinsburg.
